Privacy policy

This policy explains what information Intervala uses, why we use it, and the choices you have.

Effective and last updated: October 24, 2026

1. Who we are

Intervala provides tools for capturing vocabulary, creating learning material, and reviewing it with spaced repetition. Intervala is the controller of personal data covered by this policy. You can contact us about privacy at privacy@intervala.app.

2. Information we collect

  • Account information: your email address, name, profile image, authentication provider, account preferences, and subscription status.
  • Your learning content: collections, words, notes, answers, tags, source text, imported files, uploaded media, and content you choose to publish.
  • Learning activity: reviews, ratings, schedules, goals, streaks, sessions, and progress statistics.
  • Capture and sync information: capture source, language pair, timestamps, device installation identifier, sync state, and notification token if you enable notifications.
  • Technical information: IP address, browser or app user agent, session identifiers, request timestamps, and error information needed to operate and secure the service.
  • Purchase information: product, plan, renewal status, and transaction identifiers supplied by the applicable app store or payment provider. We do not receive your complete payment-card number.

2a. iPhone waitlist email

If you join the waitlist on our website, we collect the email address you submit. We use it only to send updates about Intervala’s iPhone launch. We do not sell or share waitlist addresses with third parties for their marketing. To stop messages, use the unsubscribe link in any waitlist email or contact us at privacy@intervala.app and ask to be removed from the waitlist.

3. Information processed on your device

In the iPhone app, text recognition, speech recognition when supported on device, dictionary lookup, scheduling, text-to-speech, and offline review can run locally. Words, sentences, and review data stay on your device until you sign in; once you do, they sync to your account. Photographs you capture in the iPhone app stay on your device and are not uploaded when your library syncs.

The app does not request your location. A photograph may contain metadata created by your device; Intervala does not use that metadata to track your location.

4. Cloud and AI features

Cloud enrichment is optional. When you enable it or deliberately use an AI feature, Intervala may send the selected word, sentence, prompt, or document text to OpenAI to produce translations, examples, explanations, cloze material, or other requested results. Photographs are not sent for ordinary word enrichment. If you explicitly use server-side image recognition, the selected image may be sent for that request.

You can turn cloud enrichment off in the mobile app. Disabling it prevents future enrichment requests, while local dictionary and study features continue to work.

5. How we use information

  • Provide accounts, synchronization, study scheduling, imports, sharing, and support.
  • Generate the content you request and account for feature or credit usage.
  • Maintain reliability, prevent abuse, investigate errors, and secure accounts.
  • Process subscriptions and comply with accounting and legal obligations.
  • Communicate essential service, security, and account information.

We do not sell personal data. We do not use your learning content for third-party advertising.

6. Legal bases

If European data-protection law applies, we process information:

  • to perform our contract with you and provide the service;
  • with your consent, including optional cloud enrichment and notifications;
  • for legitimate interests such as service security, reliability, and fraud prevention; and
  • to meet legal obligations, including tax and accounting requirements.

You may withdraw consent at any time without affecting earlier processing.

7. When we share information

We disclose information only as needed to:

  • infrastructure providers that host the application, database, files, and email;
  • OpenAI when you use an AI feature as described above;
  • Apple or Google when you use their sign-in or purchasing services;
  • Stripe when you buy or manage a web subscription: your email address, an account identifier, and purchase information. Payment details are entered with Stripe.
  • Apple for iPhone subscriptions: an account identifier links verified transactions and renewal status to your Intervala account so access can be restored across devices.
  • comply with law, protect rights and safety, or complete a corporate transaction.

A collection you make public, together with its author name and included content, can be viewed and copied by other users. Unlisted content can be accessed by anyone who has its link. Keep private information out of content you publish.

8. Cookies and similar storage

The web application uses essential cookies or local storage to keep you signed in, protect authentication flows, remember settings, and provide offline behavior. We do not currently use third-party advertising cookies or cross-site behavioral tracking.

9. Retention and deletion

We retain account and learning information while your account is active. You may request deletion by emailing us from the address associated with your account. We may keep limited records where required for legal, security, dispute, or accounting purposes. Deleted data may remain temporarily in encrypted backups until those backups rotate.

10. International transfers

Our providers may process information outside your country. Where required, we use recognized safeguards for international transfers, such as adequacy decisions or standard contractual clauses.

11. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export, delete, or restrict use of your personal data; object to certain processing; withdraw consent; and complain to your local data-protection authority. Contact privacy@intervala.app to exercise these rights. We may need to verify your identity first.

12. Children

Intervala is not directed to children who cannot legally consent to an online service in their country. If you believe a child has provided personal information without the required permission, contact us and we will investigate and delete it where appropriate.

13. Security and changes

We use technical and organizational safeguards designed to protect information, but no service can guarantee absolute security. We may update this policy as Intervala changes. We will change the date above and provide additional notice when a material change requires it.
